Primary Responsibility

Under the supervision of the Director of Technical Support Services, the Audio-Visual Engineer works in the Technology Support Services team and is responsible for providing technical expertise in supporting commercial-grade, instructional, and general audio/visual technology, ensuring technology is consistent, reliable, innovative, and meeting the needs of the college now and into the future.

This position manages installation projects large and small and performs preventive maintenance, equipment repairs, upgrades, modifications, and installations of general college audio/visual technology, video streaming technology, classroom audio/visual technology, and event audio/visual technology. This position researches technology trends and proposes technological enhancements and improvements for the college and its various spaces and classrooms. This position works directly with vendors and contractors for large project installation and troubleshooting tasks and oversees smaller in-house installation projects. This position provides direct and indirect training to students and staff in the use of the college's audio/visual technology, instructional technology, and remote learning technology.

Hiring range = $71,208.96 - $79,121.07 annual salary depending upon a combination of education and experience. Pre-requisites for Position (Qualification Standards)

Education and experience sufficient to meet the rigors of the position. Examples include a High School Diploma/GED and six years of commercial audio/visual support, project management, or related work experience; Associate's Degree from an accredited institution and four years of related work experience; Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution in computer science or related IT field with two years of related work experience; or equivalent education and experience that will provide the necessary knowledge, skill and abilities to perform the functions of the position.

Preferred experience/certifications include: Avixa Certified Technology Specialist (CTS) certification, Commercial Audio Technician (CAT) certification, Crestron Technical Institute (CTI) Technician certification, Project Management Professional (PMP) certification, Certified Audio Engineer, Certified Video Engineer

Special skills or abilities related to the position: Advanced knowledge of commercial audio/visual technology. Advanced knowledge of theater, auditorium, and classroom audio/visual technology. Advanced knowledge of boardroom and conference room audio/visual technology. Advanced knowledge of microphone and voice systems. Advanced knowledge of room control systems. Audio/visual technology support and training: 50%
  • As the audio/visual engineer for college-wide audio/visual technology in classrooms, auditoriums, conference and boardrooms, and other spaces, this position is responsible for providing intermediate to advanced expertise in supporting commercial-grade, instructional, and general audio/visual technology at the college.
  • Guides and assists the Technology Support Services Team in providing elite support and troubleshooting efforts for the college's audio/visual technology, triages support from vendors and contractors, escalates support when appropriate, and ensures problem resolutions are applied quickly and efficiently to restore technology operations.
  • Assesses collegewide technology performance and operations to identify and implement opportunities for improvement of the user technology experience.
  • Prepares, develops, and maintains up-to-date training, training materials, tutorials, guides, best practices, demonstrations, and instructions for technical and non-technical users in the use of collegewide technology in simple and easy-to-follow steps. Trains technical staff to provide routine trainings, instructional guides, and signage for collegewide technology to effectively assist students, staff, and others in the use of collegewide technology. Occasionally provides direct in-person training to technical or nontechnical groups or individuals, virtualized or prerecorded trainings, and generally assists the IT department in training users to get the most out of college technology with simple and easy-to-follow guides and instructions.
  • Assists the IT department, specifically the Technology Support Services Team and Service Desk staff, with learning and advancing audio/visual technology operational and support knowledge and skills. Provides IT technicians with standardized technology support best practices, guidelines, and assigns technology improvement tasks.
  • Provides lead support for classroom technology including Smart learning technology equipped with interactive SMART displays, projectors capable of showing either computer data or video images, sound systems, video streaming equipment, commercial audio/visual equipment, carts containing technology equipment, and internet connections as well as peripheral equipment such as document cameras.
  • Provides lead support for online and remote learning/meeting environments and online learning technology including video conferencing platforms and audio/visual conferencing equipment. Works with faculty, Program Developers, and the Center for Instruction, Design, and Access to align classroom technology with instructional needs.
  • Provides lead support for collegewide instruction via electronic equipment, audio/visual hardware and software, computer and device connections and integrations, video streaming technology, and remote learning technologies.
  • Assesses collegewide technology, technology incidents and requests to identity issues and problem trends and takes steps to coordinate problem solving efforts and proactive maintenance and support planning within the IT Department.
  • Maintains intermediate to advanced technical knowledge, skill, and experience with collegewide technology supported by the IT department; maintains basic knowledge of networking technologies and concepts including layers 1-3 of the OSI Model, TCP/IP, DHCP, DNS, UTP and STP Cat6+ Ethernet cabling and termination, and network integration of audio/visual technologies; expands technical knowledge and expertise through regular training and research; occasionally attends general and higher education focused audio/visual conferences, demonstrations, and events; communicates with other higher education institutions' audio/visual and IT contacts on technology trends and future technologies adoptions and implementations.
  • Maintains positive working relationships with technology vendors, contractors, and installers.
  • Performs with a high degree of professionalism and exhibits strong customer service practices in interactions with college employees, students, vendors, and CMC affiliates.
  • Performs other duties as may be assigned by the Director of Technical Support Services and the Executive Director of Information Technologies.
  • Occasional and routine travel to the college's 12 physical campus locations, remote sites, and remote meeting sites to perform proactive technology support, technology problem and incident response, and troubleshooting tasks, trainings, and to assess and improve audio/visual operations collegewide.
Project management for audio/visual technology projects: 50%
  • Researches, plans, designs, and engineers collegewide audio/visual technology components for classrooms, auditoriums, meeting rooms, boardrooms, event spaces, and various other spaces; works directly with vendors and contractors to produce commercial-grade, highly effective, and modern technology designs and plans for technology upgrades and implementations.
  • Stays in-sync with teaching and learning teams in Academic Affairs department and with campus leadership to ensure classroom, meeting room, and event spaces audio/visual technologies are modern and relevant.
  • Lead project manager and coordinator for installation and implementation of collegewide audio/visual technology projects. Works closely with the IT department, Facilities department, campuses, and other departments to facilitate technology projects.
  • Develops comprehensive project plans that merge campus and space requirements with college and IT departmental goals. Coordinates various technical and nontechnical personnel during project phases, from initial development through implementation. Manages operational workflow changes in conjunction with the technology solutions and applications implementation.
  • Assists with the vendor selection process and college request for proposal (RFP) process; manages the acquisition of resources and materials as needed before and during projects by communicating with team members, customers, stakeholders, leadership, and budget managers and negotiating price and payment agreements with vendors; develops, implements, and monitors project budgets that are complex in nature; allocates resources and tracks and approves expenditures with oversight from IT management and college leadership; prepares reports detailing the status of the project budget and compliance to any requirements as specified by funding sources; ensures the college receives best value and consistently high-quality technology implementations.
  • Coordinates the work of consultants and team members who have been assigned responsibility within various project roles; establishes work plan responsibilities; ensures technical proficiency and productivity of project staff and arranges for training as necessary with the support of IT management. Performs lead work over lower-level project team members by developing or modifying work plans, assigning and distributing work, providing work instruction, resolving problems encountered during daily operations, and providing input for performance enhancement.
  • Ensures positive project outcomes, customer satisfaction, effective use of college resources, and prioritizes project work to fit college objectives and priorities while supporting the college's vision statement, mission statement and commitments to equity, care, innovation, and integrity; follows up with vendors and service providers following project and installation work completion to ensure all expected work is performed, components are fully operational as expected, and all problems are addressed expeditiously; monitors and assesses technology implementation short and long-term usage to ensure continual operational success for college technology users; inspects projects for quality assurance; performs project closure activities including release of contract and permanent team members from the project, and completing lessons learned and project implementation review of best practices.
  • Documents and maintains inventories of collegewide audio/visual technology infrastructure, classroom technology, technology assets, configurations, layouts, and diagrams.
  • Schedules and oversees the collegewide maintenance and refresh cycle of video conferencing technology, instructional and classroom technology including Smart technology; builds upgrade path schedules and replacement schedules for audio/visual technology; serves as project lead for audio/visual technology design, installation, upgrades, modifications, and relocations.
  • Performs audio/visual technology equipment assessments, installations, repairs, and replacements in concert with the IT department, the Technical Support Services Team, and with vendors, contracted installers, or repair service providers.
  • Tests and troubleshoots audio/visual technology configurations and components in equipment testing and simulation environments.
  • Occasional travel to the college's 12 physical campus locations, remote sites, and remote meeting sites to perform and oversee installation, upgrade, modification, and other project tasks.
Supervision Received

This position reports to the Director of Technical Support Services.

Supervisory Responsibility

This position may supervise part time staff and student workers.

Special Conditions of Employment

Successful completion of a background check including motor vehicles records report will be required. Incumbents in this position will adhere to all safety and compliance policies of Colorado Mountain College while performing all duties assigned. Travel, evenings and weekends may be required at times.

Working Conditions

This position requires constant sitting, occasional walking, standing and driving; occasional handling objects, pushing/pulling; frequent reaching with hands/arms, and use of finger movements; occasional lifting, carrying, pushing or pulling objects up to 50 lbs. Constant written and oral communication and the ability to reason and analyze and perform calculations occasionally. Work is performed using a computer and standard office equipment daily and driving a vehicle occasionally.
