DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW The Center for Agroecology at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) maintains more than thirty acres of land for organic crop production, research, education, and outreach. This land and associated facilities have been in operation for over 50 years and serve as the primary classroom for a diverse range of hands-on programming that spans academic, research, and community programs. This includes research and education programs for the Environmental Studies department, Agroecology major, research and education programs serving multiple campus divisions, co-curricular student engagement opportunities, the Apprenticeship Program, short courses and community workshops. The CfA also serves as a public demonstration site open daily for use by university students, K-12 students, and the general public.
The incumbent's work will support the CfA mission to advance agroecology and equitable food systems through experiential education, participatory research, agricultural extension, collaborative program-building, community engagement, and public service. JOB SUMMARY The Cowell Coffee Shop Lead is the primary staff responsible for our Cowell Coffee Shop (CCS): For the Peoples, a student-engaged basic needs cafe. The position works with a robust student staff team to deliver a supportive and nourishing environment and broad sustainability programming for all students. In addition to the coffee shop location, the role includes overseeing a food trailer that integrates sustainability and basic needs programming support through culinary demonstrations and programs. A key role of this position is providing education and training for students on sustainable food systems.
The Cowell Coffee Shop: For the Peoples is a basic needs initiative student support site with a mobile food trailer kitchen operated by the Center for Agroecology through the Division of Social Sciences in partnership with the Dean of Students Office and College Housing and Educational Services (CHES). Beyond these central partners, the Cowell Coffee Shop Lead works with many additional campus units to support a diverse array of student programming.
APPOINTMENT INFORMATION Budgeted Salary: $35.11 - $37.26 / Hourly. Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and experience.

JOB DUTIES 50% - Cowell Coffee Shop and Mobile Food Hub Management - Maintains day-to-day operations of the CCS and mobile food hub, including but not limited to supply ordering, product and menu planning, operations scheduling, facilities maintenance, basic accounting, and administration.
- Administers policies that directly affect student employees. Recommends changes to unit or sub-unit policies and practices.
- Identifies and recommends opportunities for continual improvement and risk management across Cowell Coffee Shop operations.
- Oversees assignment of tasks, checks work areas at frequent intervals and maintains schedules.
- Maintains weekly product and good ordering and usage flow for the Coffee Shop sustainability program site and mobile food hub.
- Builds and maintains collaborative relationships with program partnerships utilizing the site and offerings
- Audits and ensures compliance of sustainable food prep to QA standards and safety/security related to handling and preparation of food.
- Develops and maintains exceptional customer service standards.
- Operates a campus vehicle to complete tasks.
- Oversees and educates student employees to complete services using established food safety guidelines, procedures, and quality control.
40% - Program Design, Delivery, Instruction, Supervision and Reporting - Participates in program review, analysis, and design for Center basic needs and sustainability programming including the Leadership Development Program, Internships, and others.
- Coordinates academic internships with various campus departments.
- Participates in program review, analysis, and co-design of cross-campus basic needs and sustainability programming. Leads research and planning for program design.
- Collaborates with cross-campus units on program planning and logistics.
- Supports data collection and reporting of service programs.
- Provides direction to student employees according to established policies and management guidance.
- Oversees and educates student employees on sustainable kitchen operations and management.
10% - Organizational Coordination - Participates in Center staff and committee meetings and planning.
Participates in regular campus basic needs leadership meetings and reporting / planning activities.
Participates in relevant campus trainings and programs.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS - High school diploma or equivalent certification / experience.
- Knowledge of sustainability concepts and practices including food service systems, procurement, and waste management practices.
- Working knowledge of food service and sanitation regulations.
- Working knowledge sufficient to conduct basic food operations and quality control analysis.
- Proficient interpersonal skills to provide work supervision guidance to other personnel and work with partners on joint projects.
- Intermediate computer application skills and software management tools.
- Creative problem-solving skills with the ability to demonstrate sound judgment and decision-making.
- Basic mathematical and budget control skills to accurately manage expenses for supplies, inventory, and vendor sourcing.
- Proficient verbal communication skills with the ability to engage in active listening.
- Proficient written communication skills to effectively engage with campus stakeholders.
- Proficient ability to build collaborative relationships across campus.
- Ability to multi-task and ensure productive time management.
- Demonstrates ability to research and design sustainability programming.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT - Selected candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment criminal history background check.
- ServSafe Certification or equivalent certification.
- Must possess a valid license to drive in the state of California and be able to participate in the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) pull notice program.
- The selected candidate will be required to work all scheduled hours on-site.
- Ability to work a variable schedule including evenings and weekends.
- Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends as directed.
- Selected candidate will be required to complete training within established time frames as directed including UC compliance training.
