Grants Manager
Organization Overview:
Community Services League (CSL), founded in 1916, is one of the Kansas City region’s largest social service providers. Through its mission and vision of creating meaningful and lasting change in the lives of area neighbors, CSL maintains and delivers a variety of innovative anti-poverty programs that help move our community forward. CSL’s programming offers a full suite of case management, supportive coaching, and direct wrap-around services to assist our neighbors in creatin stability in their lives and households. We assist individuals and families throughout the metro area, and, largely, our programming is in the areas of basic needs, family stability, workforce development, financial coaching, housing services, and community development.
Position Overview
The diversity and strategic focus of our various external funding streams at Community Services League (CSL) plays a pivotal role in enabling CSL to execute its mission, vision and programming objectives. Our ability to strategically identify, align with and secure external grant funding greatly enhances not only the volume, but also the effectiveness and expansive reach of the mission-focused work. The Grants Manager (GM) position is key to our success and requires a highly-organized, intuitive, detail-oriented, and motivated person to serve as the main conduit for researching and successfully securing new grant funding opportunities in support of all CSL operations and programs.
The Grants Manager is a full-time, exempt position on CSL’s development team. The GM is responsible for preparing and producing, in draft and final form, grant proposals and solicitations for funding from foundations, corporations, federal, state and local government entities, and, as needed, major individual donors and prospects. The GM conducts prospect research; develops solicitations and proposals for general operating, programs, and capital projects; prepares and submits grant contract documents; prepares progress and final reports to funders; maintains grant department database and calendar of submissions and other deadlines. As required, the GM coordinates with required program staff management on proposal presentations to government committees and legislators. This position supports all activities of the agency’s fund development operation including all special events and public relations events. Limited public relations event coordination and execution may be required.
Responsibilities
- Responsible for conducting the full range of activities required to prepare and submit well-written, well-researched, and well-documented proposals to foundation, corporate, government entity, and individual prospects.
- Coordinates proposal budgets with Finance Department and Program Management.
- Coordinates with Finance Department on funding needs and priorities.
- Ensures Finance Department and Program Management are informed of grant awards and award implementation specifics.
- Manages and monitors multiple grant applications and reports.
- Maintains and implements grant funding calendar activities, including cultivation activities.
- Performs prospect research on foundations and corporations to evaluate prospects for corporate and foundation grants, including meeting with foundation/corporation/government staffs.
- Comply with all grant reporting as required by foundation/corporate donors and Missouri Tax Credit contracts.
- In partnership with finance and program staff, gather information necessary to develop reports for funders on current programs.
- Coordinate, organize and submit required NAP Tax Credit Certificate documentation with donors, Finance Team and CSL’s Financial Advisor.
- Track statistics relevant to development department and grant proposals (i.e., number of residents, ethnicity breakdown, income status, program outcomes, etc.) and provide department with written materials necessary for donor stewardship.
- Maintain accurate and current records in database and in paper files, including creating new records and accurate and timely entry of all grants, grant reporting requirements, proposals and donor information.
- Make recommendations on strategies, policies, and procedures related to foundation donors.
- Communicate regularly with Chief Development Officer and appropriate teams and departments on the status of pending proposals.
- Provide a monthly Grants and Proposal Progress Report to the Chief Development Officer.
- Other duties as assigned that further department goals and objectives
- Participate in development strategy sessions
Strategic Management and Partnerships
Under the leadership and vision of the CDO, the GM is expected to work well with others and to present oneself well as part of the CSL team that includes staff, volunteers, Board members, interns and the community. Strategic planning, community-based resource mining and funding research skills are paramount.
- Overall Departmental Strategy and Indicators: Support the CDO in the development of the overall grant research, solicitation, alignment and procurement strategy and key indicators of success.
- Grant Procurement Strategy and Indicators: Based on the overall organizational strategy and strategic plan, support the CDO in the design of the development office grant procurement strategy and indicators.
- Strategy Implementation: Support the implementation of organizational and grants program strategy within the Development department.
Culture of Philanthropy:
A culture of philanthropy is where each person in the organization serves as an ambassador by promoting the organization’s mission and giving to the agency. The GM is an ambassador for the agency through his/her cultivation efforts in the community working with various community leaders, other agencies, foundations, and donors.
Preferred Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in a related field and/or a minimum of two years’ experience in grant research, writing and award management experience and coordinating all facets of the grant application process.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills are a must
- Willingness to work as needed to accomplish the job requirements including evenings and weekends

Hours/Schedule:
The typical hours for this position are 8am-5pm, Monday-Thursday and 8am-12pm on Friday (all CSL offices close at noon on Fridays to promote employee wellbeing). From time to time, this schedule will vary depending on the needs of clients, partners, or programs. This position is approved for a hybrid work schedule, after a successful in-office introductory/training period. The proposed hybrid work schedule would be four days per week working at home, and one day in the office, per approval from the supervisor and/or Human Resources Department.
Salary/Benefits:
Salary will be commensurate with experience with a salary range of $51,912-$67,733. CSL offers an employee health insurance plan, and a retirement savings plan with company contributions, that is available after the required tenure is met.
