Job Description

SUMMARY OF FUNCTIONS:

A Mechanical Engineer at United Science develops manufacturing equipment and processes by studying product requirements; researching, designing, modifying, and testing specifications and manufacturing methods and equipment.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Work on product development or sustaining projects, which involve design, replacement or redesign for obsolete components, product improvement features, cost reduction, manufacturing support, and field complaints.
  • Prepare assembly or product layout and detailed drawings and participate in the manufacture or building of prototype products or systems.
  • Provide tolerances studies, apply GD&T, conduct stress-analysis studies, develop reliability testing procedures, and generate appropriate design verification reports.
  • Design testing methods to analyze product capabilities and troubleshoot any mechanical or structural flaws. Perform analysis tests to track results and make improvements.
  • Recommend design changes, cost reductions, warranty improvements, and manufacturing issues.
  • Work with production, marketing, and purchasing, providing product specifications for their use.
  • Ensure that design implementation, test, and maintenance methods/processes are developed and executed in a manner that supports company quality standards.
  • Write product specifications, document test results, prepare product operating instructions and review technical literature.
  • Participate in test runs or field installations.
  • Participate in scheduled department meetings to report the progress of the overall project or portion of the project, and prepare and give design presentations.
  • Other duties and tasks as assigned.

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS

Reports directly to the head of the Engineering department or, if vacant, the Director of Operations.

EXPERIENCE AND/OR EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or mechanical engineering technology or equivalent experience.
  • Strong ability with computer-aided design systems and experience with mathematical computing and analysis tools knowledge (SolidWorks, AutoCad, PDM).
  • Superior computer skills; well-versed in Microsoft Office Suite (particularly strong with Excel);
  • Able to create 2-D or 3-D designs to run simulations, analyses, and tests

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Ability to communicate orally with management and other co-workers is crucial. Regular use of the telephone and e-mail for communication is essential. Sitting for extended periods is common. Hearing and vision within normal ranges are helpful for normal conversations, receiving ordinary information, and preparing or inspecting documents.

No heavy lifting is expected. Exertion of up to 10 lbs. of force occasionally may be required. Good manual dexterity for the use of common office equipment such as computer terminals, calculators, and copiers.

Good reasoning ability is required to solve a wide range of business problems. Able to apply statistical calculations, analysis of variance, correlation techniques, and sampling theory as well as algebra, linear equations, and other analytics as required. Able to understand and utilize Internet server and network reports to conduct business.

The job is performed indoors in a traditional office setting. Activities include extended periods of sitting and extensive work at a computer monitor.
