This position is accountable for the operation of the District Radio Control Console, assisting in the coordination of repair and maintenance of the entire district-wide radio system, maintaining the inventory, assisting in the preparation of reports and Team Section Maps and training employees in the proper use of radio equipment.
This position reports to the Services & Development Technician. There are no subordinates to this position.
The district is heavily dependent on radio communications not only during weather emergencies but also for day-to-day operations. This position also requires a reasonable amount of overtime during snow events and other emergency situations. It is imperative that accurate, timely records and high-quality communications be kept in a manner consistent with Federal Regulations.
Typical problems faced by the incumbent include concise handling of priority calls during extreme weather emergencies, the recognition of symptoms leading to radio communication equipment failures and training employees in proper radio use. The greatest challenge to this position is to keep an accurate status of road conditions during the many storms that threaten the safety of the traveling public.
Functions personally performed include the receiving and transmitting of information to field personnel representing all bureaus. The incumbent works closely with the Illinois State Police and Station One, local law enforcement agencies, railroads, and utility companies in the handling of emergency calls relating to road hazards, vehicles in distress, accidents, and railroad derailments. The incumbent also reports and arranges for needed repairs to base, tower and console equipment; maintains all records of communication, road condition reports, snow control vehicle routes and various call number lists. The incumbent also maintains and updates the district radio inventory, including the mobile radios and stationary equipment. The incumbent receives, tracks, and distributes information regarding lane and road closures throughout the district. The incumbent assists both Operations units as well as other bureaus with the tracking, management, and subsequent use of various information including data entry of billing information, timekeeping, and other asset tracking information. Receives material requests from field personnel and places the orders with the contract vendor. Creates corresponding material order in AMP (Asset Management Program).
This position presents training on proper radio use to new employees or others not familiar with radio procedures. This position requires overtime. This position may require 24-hour availability during snow and ice season as well as some travel.
The incumbent works within the department policies and procedures governing communication operations. The incumbent makes independent decisions on updating various reports and records.
Contacts within the department are with all district personnel and Station One. Contacts outside the department are with state and local law enforcement agencies, weather service, utilities, and radio repair services.
The effectiveness of this position can be measured by the timelines and conciseness of information received and transmitted and the quality of training.
1. Receives and transmits information from field personnel.
2. Tracks, maintains, and distributes a district road closure list.
3. Assists in the coordination of the repair and maintenance of the district-wide radio system.
4. Maintains all records, inventory and reports relating to the radio system.
5. Trains employees in proper radio procedures.
6. Receives material requests from field personnel and places the orders with the contract vendor. Creates corresponding material order in AMP (Asset Management Program).
7. Monitors and reviews repair contracts and material contracts.
8. Assists Operations units with entering Fuel Tickets, Repair Tickets, Time Keeping, and other tracking information into AMP (Asset Management Program).
9. Responds in a timely manner during emergency operations outside normal working hours.
10. Performs duties in compliance with departmental safety rules. Performs all duties in a manner conducive to the fair and equitable treatment of all employees.
11. Performs other duties as required or assigned.
Work Hours: 8:00 am - 4:30 pm Monday-Friday- may include holidays; 24-hour availability during snow & ice season
