Job Description

The Brighton Center for Specialty Care is the newest University of Michigan Ambulatory Care facility dedicated to providing high quality health care services for adults and children.  The new 2-story facility is located at 7500 Challis Rd. Brighton MI.  We are actively seeking compassionate, enthusiastic, and patient-focused individuals who will share in the goal of crafting the ideal experience for our patients, families and employees.

  • Provides nursing care to Orthopaedic Surgery patients who have been scheduled for surgery to support improved surgical outcomes, patient safety, efficient utilization of OR resources as well as improve faculty, staff and patient satisfaction.
  • Coordinates care pre-operatively for patients already scheduled for surgery for orthopaedic patient populations including, but not limited to pre-op clearances, lab result follow-up, medical record review for surgical risk factors, need for medical clearances, medication management before and after surgery
  • Provides patient and family education on surgical needs including in-person patient education classes and telehealth education 
  • Provides nursing assessment and care to include but not limited to post-op wound and incision site assessment
  • Position will expand to include all Orthopaedic divisions as capacity is determined.
  • Prepares consent for patients as directed under MM protocol
  • Develops and distributes weekly OR list for Ortho team
  • Provides tele-health nursing to patients and families to include: triaging calls from patients and families, clinicians, and other healthcare team members.
  • Collaborate with other health team members and associated resource persons to ensure continuity of care across all care environments. 
  • Assist in the development and implementation of competencies, protocols, and patient education tools to improve patient care.
  • Candidate must be able to function with a minimum of supervision and be highly motivated to provide excellent care and patient advocacy.
  • Participates in quality improvement initiatives.

Expectations of the position:

  • Demonstrated excellence in communication skills; both verbal and written--role requires the ability to plan and develop patient education tools, protocols, and clinical competencies
  • Demonstrated excellence in critical thinking skills and problem solving skills in daily practice across the continuum of care for surgical patients and their families: assessment, planning, intervention and evaluation of care.
  • Demonstrated customer service and conflict management skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish collaborative practice with multidisciplinary team.
  • Demonstrated ability to direct nursing practice and delegate to clinical support staff
  • Demonstrated ability to function independently.
  • Demonstrated skills to organize and manage multiple interventions simultaneously understanding acuity and urgency in prioritizing duties.
  • Proficiency in computer and keyboarding skills, using an electronic medical record, and Microsoft Office and calendaring experience.
  • Current license to practice Nursing in the State of Michigan.
  • Three (3) years direct experience with Adult Orthopaedic patients as a RN, within the last five (5) years. Preference given to experience working with total joint replacement patient population.

Must be willing to travel to off-site clinics to provide coverage with potential expansion of orthopaedic divisions.

NOTE: In order to be considered for this position the applicant must have met or will have met all the required qualifications prior to the start date of employment.

Salary & Nursing Framework Level:
This UMPNC RN posting is posted as Nursing Framework LEVEL C
Actual Nursing Framework LEVEL and salary will be determined at time of hire.
Nursing Framework levels range from Level A to Level F.

Hours per week: 0.5 FTE position (24 hours one week, followed by 16 hours the following week)
Shift/ Days/ Hours: Day shift; variable hours; 8hr shifts
Location: Brighton Center for Specialty Care with potential to travel to off-site clinics to provide coverage with potential expansion of orthopaedic divisions. 

All new employees will be expected to float to a designated unit(s) in times of low census.

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the Michigan Nurses Association and the U-M Professional Nurse Council union, which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours and other terms and conditions of employment.
