CMHHIP Education Department

This work unit exists to provide therapeutic academic educational services to adults within an education classroom or on various units throughout the Colorado Mental Health Hospital at Pueblo (CMHHIP), a residential psychiatric hospital program. In addition, it helps fulfill mandates as set forth in the federal Individual with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and Colorado's. Exceptional Children's Educational Act (ECEA) mandating a free and appropriate education for individuals under the age of twenty-two and or patients with Individualized Educational Plans.

The CMHHIP Education Department exists to provide therapeutic academic educational services to adolescent patients and adult patients within an education classroom or on various units throughout the Colorado Mental Health Hospital in Pueblo (CMHHIP), a residential psychiatric hospital program. In addition, it helps fulfill mandates as set forth in the federal Individual with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and Colorado’s Exceptional Children’s Educational Act (ECEA) mandating a free and appropriate education for individuals under the age of twenty-two and or patients with Individualized Educational Plans.

Job duties:
  • Provides formal academic and therapeutic individual and group instruction to adolescents and adults; in the areas of: special education, remedial education, GED, and general academic education. Education may be individualized to meet the needs of the student's Individualized Education Plan (IEP)
  • Routinely develops, researches, monitors & adapts learning activities to meet a variety of individual needs, learning abilities, and disabilities utilizing prescriptive lesson plans, software, student progress data, testing data, various assessments, continuous evaluation, and various assignments related to the content area being taught
  • Routinely develops lesson plans to facilitate student progress as required/requested by supervisor.
  • Utilizes/incorporates scientific based learning approaches & teaching methods supported by data & research. Provides treatment team with formal and informal assessments of individual student’s' academic, social, affective, and job-related needs
  • Maintains attendance, grades, and essential academic data and maintains classroom/patient data to support educational growth and sound teaching methods
  • Assists with unit and department management needs providing expertise, schedules, coverage, and filling short-term vacancies
  • Regular reads/reviews plan of care on all patients under the employee’s charge as they are formulated or updated and signs each new or revised plan of care ensuring educational objectives and interventions are entered into the patient’s plan of care
  • Attends patient staffing/plan of care meetings as needed to facilitate program implementation and communicate patient progress in the education program
  • Maintains and develops competencies and skills by attending mandatory training and special training as needed and assigned 
  • Any duties that may arise to meet the mission of the unit and department not covered in duties listed above
Education/Licensure/Certification/Experience:


ALL teaching assignments:

Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in a field of study related to the work assignment
and
Current, valid Initial or Professional Teacher license issued by the Colorado Department of Education

ALL teaching assignments:
Current, valid Interim Teacher license, or Temporary Educator Eligibility Authorization
will substitute for the Colorado Initial or Professional Teacher license

Substitution:
Current, valid Interim Teacher license or Temporary Educator Eligibility Authorization will substitute for the Colorado Initial or Professional Teacher License.

Special Qualifications:
A current/valid Colorado Teacher License with endorsements in special education generalist 5-21

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with case managing and writing Individualized Education Plans (IEPs)
  • Experience with Special Education and Behavioral management
  • Experience effectively utilizing computerized learning programs
  • Experience with differentiated instruction; developing lessons. curriculum and providing instruction to meet the needs of multiple learners
  • Proficient use of assessment data to inform and drive instructional practice
  • Experience working with students with special needs across the spectrum of eligibility categories
  • Experience effectively utilizing various management tools such as Excel, Word, Power Point, scanners, and email to communicate and develop reports
Conditions of Employment:
  • A pre-employment criminal background check will be conducted as part of the selection process as this position is deemed to have direct contact with vulnerable persons. Felony convictions, conviction of crimes of moral turpitude, or convictions of misdemeanors related to job duties may disqualify you from being considered for this position. Should your background check reveal any charges or convictions, it is your responsibility to provide the CDHS Background Unit with an official disposition of any charges. Additionally, you will be required take and pass a drug screen. 
  • Current/Valid and Unrestricted Drivers License 
  • 2-step TB (tuberculosis) screening. 
  • This position will be paid biweekly. 
  • Influenza vaccination. 
  • Former State employees who were disciplinarily terminated or resigned in lieu of termination must (1) disclose that information on the application (2) provide an explanation why the prior termination or resignation should not disqualify the applicant from the current position, (3) provide the employee number from the applicant’s prior State employment. Absent extraordinary circumstances, prior disciplinary termination or resignation in lieu of termination and failure to provide this information will disqualify the applicant from future State employment with CDHS.
